Astra Starfallen
Astra could run faster than the wind, she was stronger than any human
man, and she could fly into the clouds in a shiny burst of speed with
hardly any effort. Astra was quite naturally the shining star of the Meta-Human
Super Ball League. Astra starred on her Super Ball team and was the new
face of every new advertising campaign. And she was as cute as a button.
Astra was hardly a month over eleven years old but her name was already
famous around the world and everyone wanted to be just like Astra.
Legions of little fangirls (and fanboys) cheered Astra on as she ran around
her meta-human competition, scoring goals and setting new records with
every flick of her dainty wrist. "Astra Superstar" was what
the media dubbed her and she was the universe's darling. Astra, quite
naturally, had a very big head. Not literally mind you, her real head
was quite small and perfectly proportionate, but her ego head was much
too big. On her last birthday little Astra had demanded that she be only
surrounded by yellow things. Yellow candy, yellow flowers, yellow bedspreads,
yellow soap, and even yellow people. When an offensive brown dog ran into
her line of sight, Astra threw such a fit it took fifty yellow-clad human
police officers to calm her down.
Astra also had started to refer to herself in the third person. "Astra
said that she played a pretty good game today. Astra thought the competition
was weak and flimsy." Astra had even stopped talking to anyone who
stood taller than she was. If a reporter or an adult towered over her
she would refuse to answer any questions or look directly in their eyes
until they had squatted down. Nearly everyone squatted down to talk to
Astra, who was only three foot seven. Many press photos showed Astra holding
conferences while every other person in the room worked hard to keep their
heads below hers. Sometimes Astra would purposely lie down just to see
everyone else fall down on their faces.
This was really starting to be too much. Even though Astra was the clear
cut MVP of her Super Ball team, her teammates and her coach were seriously
starting to dislike her. Even Astra's parents, the famous Mr. and Mrs.
Incredible, were starting to lose control of her. They told Astra to behave
like a "good little girl" and to be "respectful of elders"
but Astra would have none of it. She would run around in tight little
circles until her parents got dizzy trying to keep up with her. A worn
out Mrs. Incredible was heard saying "I don't know what happened
to Astra, we certainly didn't raise her to be this way." Part of
the problem was that Mr. and Mrs. Incredible were always away on missions
to save the universe and everybody else was too frightened of Astra to
reprimand her.
One day Mindy, the human mascot of Astra's Super Ball team, came up with
a great idea. "What if we dunked Astra in milk? Wouldn't that make
her lose all her powers and she wouldn't be super anymore?" Everyone
knew that dunking meta-humans in milk was the best way to take away their
powers. While dunking anything in milk seemed excessively cruel, nobody
had a better idea of how to control Astra. The plans were made, the milk
was prepared, and during the last game of the season, Astra Starfall would
be dunked in milk.
The championship game of the season rolled around and quite naturally
Astra was the superstar. In the first quarter alone she had accumulated
three scores, one assist, six high fives and two stadium wide waves. Astra
was shining brighter than ever and she was playing better than ever. Zipping
along and moving around the giant redwood sentinels had never been this
easy. Every time a teammate got the ball Astra would scream, "Pass
it to me! Pass it to me!" Whenever a player on the opposing Cerulean
Blues got the ball Astra would steal it away and cry at them "Astra
just played you! You suck fool!" With the score seven to three during
halftime, Astra headed into the locker room for her usual yellow crème
cookie extravaganza.
While the coach tried to talk some strategy and her teammates tried to
keep their focus, Astra sat in her own leather recliner and munched on
her cookies. She never offered to share her cookies, ever. And if anyone
was caught even looking at a cookie, Astra would pick it up and gulp it
down as fast as possible. The team huddled together and gave one last
pre-championship cheer, minus Astra of course. She always exited the locker
room last so she could wait for the crowd to cheer her entrance. As her
teammates ran onto the field, Astra stayed behind and waited for her name
to be called. "Astra! Astra!" the crowd chanted and Astra smiled
and prepared to slowly glide her way up onto the field.
Without warning, a jumbo, extra large, economy sized bucket of milk came
sloshing down over the railing and Astra fell flat on her butt from the
force of the downpour. The milk kept coming and coming and even as Astra
screamed, her mouth filled with milk and her shiny superhuman glow started
to fade away. Astra struggled and tried to fly out of the milky mess but
she could only levitate for a split second before she fell back down.
After a few minutes of desperate paddling, Astra Starfall, MVP of the
Super Ball league, was fished out of the milk, looking very sad and wet
with milk still dripping off her ponytails.
"Ready to go back out there Astra? The game's about to start!"
Astra struggled onto the field and she could hardly move, all her superhuman
speed was drained from her. The Super Ball came bouncing in front of her
and Astra ran over to pick it up but she only succeeded in nudging it
a little before a Cerulean Blue player grabbed it out of her hands and
scored. This kept on happening the entire game. Astra would run, very
slowly, to get the ball but then she wouldn't be able to lift it. Finally,
Astra looked over to the bench and motioned for a substitute. Without
a single goal, assist, high five, stadium wave or insult to her credit,
Astra chose to leave the game. The crowd jeered at little Astra and threw
brown cookies at her.
But Astra was still a super girl, even without her super powers, and she
did not cry even one bit. Astra sulked for a while on the bench but then
as the game got close she started to cheer her teammates on. Astra was
yelling and screaming and using her still super human female vocal cords
to rally her teammates. The Astroville Astras won the championship again
but for the first time, Astra wasn't selected as the most valuable player.
But that was okay with her, Astra had her teammates and her cookies and
she shared them both with everyone and started to use "we" instead
of "Astra" and floated up to meet the reporters who were taller
than her. Astra's powers had slowly returned after the dunking because
although Mindy and the team wanted to teach Astra a lesson, they didn't
want to be overly cruel. They had used low fat milk for Astra's dunking
and everyone knows that only whole milk completely eliminates super powers.
